Over the month of January I had the pleasure of partnering up with a local studio called Barre Fitness in Port Moody, and you guys, I’m in love with their workout classes!
Barre is a popular style of workout, and it’s not going anywhere. If you aren’t familiar with Barre exercise, it’s a style of workout that really connects the mind and body and uses a combination of postures inspired by ballet, Pilates, and yoga. The barre is used as your balance prop while performing certain exercises (a lot of leg work is done at the barre!) and focuses on isometric strengthening which forces you to keep your body still while performing certain movements that contract specific muscles. Barre classes also incorporate a ton of core strengthening, cardio movements to get that heart rate up, and light-weight/high-rep small range of motion movements to really fire up your muscles— I’m not kidding you when I say I’m sore after every class. I never thought 3lb and 5lb weights would burn as much as they do and my legs are on fire after class, I love it! Not to mention, the instructors are amazing at what they do and they definitely put you to the challenge. It’s such a fun atmosphere to be in and the upbeat workout music helps get you through those last few reps when all you want to do is give up.
To be honest, it had been a while since I hit up a fitness class prior to this last month. I felt that scheduling myself into barre classes would be a great way to get myself back into a healthy balance with exercise since the holiday relax time was ending and I was ready to get back into a more structured regimen with exercise. I was much more flexible with workouts and eating habits over the holiday’s. When the holiday’s are over it can feel overwhelming and difficult to get back into a structured healthy regimen— even for myself, I need motivation some days! I personally find signing up for a workout class and scheduling it into my google calendar on my phone where it is visible really helps keep me committed and puts things to action. I schedule everything into my google calendar, therefore I am looking at it daily and seeing my workout scheduled in really helps reinforce the habit for me. I also like being able to go online and check out what classes are offered at what times and fitting them into my schedule. The Barre website allows you to schedule classes a few weeks in advance— it’s a great way to stay committed and motivated, plus it helps you prioritize your workouts for a few weeks in a row! In addition, the studio offers different packages and challenges to help keep you inspired and to support your health and fitness journey.

Since I’ve finally gotten back into a more consistent workout regime, I thought I would share 4 tips on how to get motivated to workout during those waves of life an extra boost is much needed.
1. GET CLEAR ABOUT YOUR GOALS: Health and fitness is a very personal thing, and it looks different for everyone. Only you can determine what your personal health and fitness goals are. Take some time to brain-storm and write down any fitness goals you have and stick to it. Try to avoid looking at what others are doing to achieve there fitness goals, really think about it for yourself and your health. Are you hoping to strengthen your cardio? Build more muscle strength? Clear your mind? Lengthen and tone? Beat disease or ailments? Whatever your goal, it’s completely up to you to decide. Get clear about your goals, and put them to action. For me, my recent goal was to book more fitness classes and get back into a fitness regime for my overall health. I get stiff and sore when I take too long of a break from exercise, and breaking a sweat helps keep my mind clear and inspired. Over the last month at Barre I have regained that mind-body connection with myself and have become more aware of things like my posture and proper body mechanics. Attending Barre classes helped me focus on doing proper movements that utilize and fire the right muscle groups. It’s a great sweat!
2. PLAN IT + MAKE IT A LIFESTYLE: I know busy working women, and anyone with a hectic schedule, understand how difficult it can be to schedule in workout time, but that’s what planning ahead is for. Pick a day of the week to sit down and schedule whatever style of workout you enjoy in on the days and times that work for you. This is the time to determine if you’re going to hit up a barre class, go to the gym, book pilates, go to yoga, and so on. It’s a great habit to get into that can help you stay committed and turn fitness into a lifestyle. As I mentioned above I could easily schedule my barre classes in advance, which helped me stay committed.
3. MOTIVATIONAL PLAYLISTS: If you’re not into fitness classes and you enjoy solo workouts more, make a playlist of your favourite music or compile some motivational podcasts together that you can listen to throughout your workout. It can help make working out something you look forward to! If I am doing a solo workout I’ll make sure I have a list of podcasts or upbeat music lined up that I can listen to, it makes all the difference in my mood and makes me look forward to getting a workout in.
4. KEEP EACH OTHER ACCOUNTABLE: If you enjoy a group activity over a solo workout, then get some people together and make it a group activity to help keep each other accountable. Get together with people who want to see you thrive, whether it be your close friends, family, co-workers, etc. Surround yourself with people who will help keep you accountable and will make it feel fun. Hit up a workout class or go to the gym together— it’s always fun going to a class or to the gym together then heading out for a healthy smoothie, coffee, or even brunch afterward (I love a good brunch spot that serves avocado toast for post-workout!). You could try a group spin class, pilates class, or yoga class to get started— these are either really fun and upbeat or relaxing. If you’re going the gym route, check to see if the gym offers a group rate as this is a great way to save some money!
